Listening phase and UK Strategy

Our listening phase and UK Strategy

The vision of the Money and Pensions Service is everyone making the most of their money and pensions. But we can’t do this alone. It must be a collective effort delivered through collaboration across the sector and industry.

So to get the ball rolling, between April and June 2019 we held a series of listening events in cities across the UK to gather your views as part of our three-month listening phase.

We hosted ten public roadshows across the UK:

  • Belfast
  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Cardiff
  • Edinburgh
  • Leeds
  • London
  • Manchester
  • Peterborough, and
  • the South East of England.

We also invited sector experts to feed in on topics such as pensions, women and personal finance, financial education and financial wellbeing in the workplace.

The listening phase provided an opportunity for stakeholders like you to feed in your hopes, aspirations and ambitions as we start to develop our UK Strategy and corporate plan. We invited those who couldn’t attend in person to feed back by email.

The UK Strategy and corporate plan launch in early 2020. The listening events were hosted by our executive leadership team or our chair Sir Hector Sants.

Who made input into the strategy?

We heard from around 1,000 people from a range of backgrounds, including:

  • major suppliers and financial services stakeholders
  • employers
  • business groups
  • small businesses
  • policymakers
  • local government
  • delivery partners
  • educators
  • front-line charities
  • local practitioners.

We are always particularly keen to hear from people and organisations who have not worked with us before.

Helpful background reading on our listening events

As a way of focusing discussions during the listening events on the many dimensions of money and pensions, we created two “listening” documents to summarise what we knew and our view of the key challenges.

We encouraged all event attendees to read our Listening Document Executive Summary which gives a quick and visual way into the full Listening Document, with links to its greater detail.

We also published a lessons-learned document from the Financial Capability Board looking back at the first three years of work on the Financial Capability Strategy for the UK. This will be of interest if you have previously been involved in that work.

Read a summary of the discussions in our Listening Phase Report.
