What is ‘money guidance’?
The term ‘money guidance’ means impartial guidance on money management and financial wellbeing in the non-regulated space, from signposting through to complex, technical guidance delivered by a person (as opposed to a website). Find out more here about the difference between advice and guidance.
Who delivers money guidance?
People across the UK should be receiving good quality money guidance regardless of where they go to get it.
Money guidance is often given as part of wider services provided by thousands of diverse organisations and millions of practitioners across the UK.
Staff and volunteers may work within a community organisation, housing association, mental health services, or as a money mentor to name just a few examples.
The people these organisations and practitioners support are likely to be seeking advice about a life event, may be vulnerable or have complex needs.
What is the Money Guiders Programme?
People across the UK should be receiving good quality money guidance regardless of where they go to get it.
Our programme is here to help anyone who delivers money guidance. Through our programme we aim to raise the status and profile of money guidance and the quality of its delivery.
What is the Money Guidance Competency Framework?
The competency framework is designed for anyone who provides any type of money guidance whatever their sector or job role.
It sets out the core competencies needed to provide a safe, quality service for customers.
How can I get involved in the Money Guiders Programme?
Our Money Guidance Competency framework is available for everyone to use.
We have suggested a range of ways it can be put into action and created mapping and development tools that can help you review and inform your practice.
You can join one of our Money Guider Networks across the four nations where you’ll be able to access further learning through webinars, workshops and online groups.
What is a Money Guider Network?
Our money guider network is a UK community where people providing any kind of money guidance can get together and learn, sharing their expertise and good practice. The networks produce a wealth of free resources including webinars, workshops, meetings and discussion groups to help support you in delivering money guidance, whatever your role.
There is a network in each of the four nations led by local organisations, with the whole of the UK community coordinated by MaPS. Network events are a great way to learn more about what works and develop skills.

What is a programme partner?
Partners will benefit from access to free e-learning mapped to our competency framework, a City & Guilds endorsed credential, and access to themed content and shared learning through the Money Guider Networks.
We work hand-in-hand with our partner organisations aiming to improve Money Guidance in a way that fits in with their aims and plans – it’s highly flexible, adaptable and accessible.
Who can become a programme partner?
Having worked with over 100 amazing organisations in our pilot phase in 2021, we’re now implementing learnings before we launch opportunities for new partners. This is likely to be in September 2022- so watch this space! We’ll be looking for organisations that already deliver some form of money guidance, to work with us..
We’d like to work with a diverse range of partners in all four nations, with the following characteristics:
- not-for-profit, community, voluntary and public sectors
- already delivering some form of money guidance to customers
- pragmatic and collaborative with an understanding that we’re developing this programme in stages
Being a partner means being involved in our evaluation – we will want to know what worked well and what didn’t. You will be helping us to improve and shape the future of the programme.
How will becoming a programme partner help me?
Becoming a partner will help you:
- improve outcomes for your customers by helping them manage their money better
- develop the skills, understanding and confidence your staff need
- understand your own or your team’s money guidance skills-set, identify where training and development is needed and filling gaps with the free learning opportunitieswe provide
- gain recognition for your employees or volunteers for giving effective money guidance
- define or enhance your customer-offer, and
- share good practice and learn from others who deliver money guidance.
Is the programme UK-wide?
Everything the programme has to offer, including the Money Guider Networks, will be available in all four nations. The Money Guidance Competency Framework, which is available for everyone to use, is also intended to apply to those working in all four nations.
Every effort has been made to ensure the language and terms used are accurate throughout with alternative terms used where appropriate.
Do I have to pay to get involved?
You do not have to pay to become a programme partner.
How can I be kept informed about the Money Guiders Programme?
Our Money Guidance Competency framework and joining the Money Guiders Network are free and available for anyone to use, anytime.
Becoming a Programme Partner and accessing the e-learning and City & Guild credential are also free but have limited places.
How does the Money Guidance Competency Framework link to other existing frameworks?
The competency framework is intended to complement, and link to, other existing frameworks. These include:
- The Scottish National Standards for Information and Advice Providers (A Quality Assurance Framework 2009)
- The Information & Advice Quality Framework for Wales (IAFQ Wales)
- The NI Advice Quality Standard (August 2014)
- The MaPS Debt Advice Quality Framework
- The Advice Quality Standard (June 2016)
